In 2024, High Plains Water District awarded the Lubbock Master Gardeners Association (LMGA) a Research and Demonstration grant. LMGA is a nonprofit education and all-volunteer organization that facilitates a Demonstration Garden at the Lubbock Memorial Arboretum.
The 2024 grant was secured to fund a project which included building (1) swale, (3) basins, (3) berms, (1) rain crossing and (1) rain garden to direct future water flow, retain stormwater for usage and prevent flooding.
Jason Hodges (Prairie Workshop) a landscape architect with LMGA planned, designed, and implemented a project at the Lubbock Arboretum to facilitate rainwater retention and reduce erosion and stormwater runoff. Heavy rainfall and erosion damaged the demonstration garden and walking pathways in 2023.
